ITALY

Created by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini and adapted from Carlo Gozzi’s play of the same name more than eight decades ago, this famous opera is based on a Persian folk story.

In it, the merciless Chinese princess Turandot is wooed by many but refuses to let any man have her. Princes come from afar to seek her out but she ensures their defeat by demanding that they answer three impossible riddles. So far, all have failed and been executed. Then one day, an exiled prince takes up the challenge and engages with the princess in a battle of wits that stirs up a maelstrom of passion, transformation and self-sacrifice.
