VAN GOGH – BRUSH WITH GENIUS
A FILM BY PETER KNAPP AND FRANÇOIS BERTRAND
(FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT)
FRANCE

Dive into the heart of Van Gogh’s paintings. For the first time, discover in IMAX the fantastic colors and passionate brushwork of a great genius as they take on a new life before our eyes.
Relive Vincent’s life journey through his letters, see the places that inspired him, and the paintings.

We will meet Vincent. During this journey he will join us, reacting to the pictures, telling us what his is opinion today. He will be looking at Peter Knapp, a man who is working today on a documentary about Van Gogh’s techniques, and at Ellen, a researcher in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She is studying his notebooks and letters. They give evidence of the fire and passion of a man who painted as he loved, who loved as he painted. And Vincent, as if he were seated next to us, will tell us the truth about his works and life. This is a chance to discover a Van Gogh we’ve never seen before: serene and radiating with love of life.

This passionate voyage, this new closeness to Van Gogh – the masterpieces and the man – open up a world of unexpected, intense emotions on the giant screen. The film offers us the unique joy of seeing and getting to know, with ever increasing admiration, the man whose energy and freedom are intrinsically bound to the great beauty of his work.

MOLIÈRE
(Film Screening)
FRANCE

Director: Laurent Tirard
Cast: Romain Duris, Fabrice Luchini, Laura Morante, Edouard Baer, Ludivine Sagnier
1644. At the age of 22, after being imprisoned for debt, Molière, a well-born young man who
had abandoned the privileges of his birth for love of a woman and the theatre – disappeared
without a trace for several months. Taking this mystery – which has never been explained, the makers of this film have concocted an elaborate historical fiction, an adventure in which young Molière finds himself caught up, a tale of deceit and disguise, of theatre, danger and passion. Imagine what happened in a period that is : the years between his release from prison in 1645 at age 22 (because his theatre company went bankrupt and he could not pay his debts) and his return to Paris 13 years later after a triumphant career as a traveling playwright and actor. The movie focuses on Molière’s relationship with Monsieur Jourdain, a rich bourgeois who wants to learn how to act. Jourdain’s wife Elmire catches the eye of Molière, while Jourdain himself becomes enamoured of the young Célimène. A story from which Molière would emerge as the greatest author in the history of the French stage.

responses shared by the majority, without his knowing it he’s become the measuring stick
of an imminent marketing institute run by two cynics, Didier and Françoise. Insatiable,
they ‘hack’ into his life, setting up hidden cameras in his apartment and arranging a
pretty girlfriend whose task is to test his tastes. And when the President of the Republic

national proportions. But taking things too much for granted can lead to unexpected

En kärlekshistoria / A Swedish Love Story
(Film screening)
Sweden

The internationally renowned auteur of Songs from the Second Floor (2000) and You, The Living (2007), also brought us En kärlekshistoria, a phenomenally successful film, first shown in Sweden almost four decades ago.

En kärlekshistoria is ostensibly a simple story about an adolescent boy and girl discovering the risk and excitement of first love. Andersson, fueled by the youthful energy and freshness of the French New Wave, located this film firmly within the social context of contemporary Sweden. The ‘love story’ is a soaring vision of purity, set against a darker satire of the Swedish bourgeousie - their petty squabbles and materialistic concerns – pointing in the direction that Andersson would later travel.

It took five years for Andersson to make a second feature, Giliap, and it was castigated by Swedish critics and ignored by audiences. Disheartened, he turned his back on films and embraced advertising, albeit in his own uncompromising way.Possibly screened in Singapore for the first time, En kärlekshistoria is a beautiful but often neglected debut by this Swedish director.

Turbulence
An exhibition by Natacha Arena
(Exhibition)
Belgium

Artist statement: The human being is the starting point in my work. I like to imagine the human body as a microcosm, a particular structure, which can be easily manipulated, decomposed into different parts. The relationship between the internal and the external, the form and the space interests me; how they are connected together and the tension that can emerge. The canvas becomes a puzzle in movement, thus creating the visualisation of a personal landscape where restructured and collected forms are entangled with figurative and organic patterns.

DE BATTRE MON COEUR S’EST ARRÊTÉ

FRANCE

Director: Jacques Audiard
Cast: Romain Duris, Niels Arestrup, Jonathan Zaccai, Gilles Cohen
Twenty-eight-year-old Tom leads a life that might be termed as criminal. In doing so, he
follows in the footsteps of his father, who made his money from dirty, and sometimes brutal,
real estate deals. Tom is a pretty hard-boiled guy but also strangely considerate as far as his father is concerned. Somehow he appears to have arrived at a critical juncture in his life when a chance encounter prompts him to take up the piano and become a concert pianist, like his mother. He senses that this might be his final opportunity to take back his life. His piano teacher is a Chinese piano virtuoso who has recently come to live in France. She doesn’t speak a lick of French so music becomes the only language they have in common. Before long, Jacques’ bid to be a better person means that he begins to yearn for true love. But, when he finally has the chance of winning his best friend’s wife, his passion only succeeds in scaring her. And then, one day, his dubious past comes to light...

SILENCE – T.H.E FIRST ANNIVERSARY
(Dance)
Spain

This August 2009, T.H.E Dance Company celebrates our first anniversary in grand fashion with Silence – T.H.E First Anniversary at the Esplanade Theatre. Choreographed by artistic director Kuik Swee Boon, former principal dancer of the Compania Nacional de Danza in Spain and the Singapore Dance Theatre, Silence is a moving contemporary dance that deals with the concept of communication breakdown in today’s technologically advanced society. We speak but do not know what we mean; we hear but do not truly listen.

Silence will feature guest dancer Luisa Maria Arias, principal dancer of the Compania Nacional de Danza (Spain) performing a duet with Kuik. Kuik will also be performing a solo in the work. The kinetic presence and sensuality of Arias, Kuik and the rest of the company are definitely not to be missed.

As the highlight of our first anniversary celebration, Silence reflects a year of achievements for T.H.E Dance Company. Past performances at the Singapore Arts Festival and the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival have received rave reviews from both the critics and audiences. Spurred on by such positivity, we challenge ourselves yet again this August by performing Silence, a work that will feature some of the strongest local and international dancers on the Esplanade Theatre stage. For those of you who want to see more of Kuik’s signature emotive lyricism, Silence is definitely a performance you want to look out for.

Set to a sublime soundscape featuring music by Radiohead, Sigur Ros and Philip Glass amongst others, Silence is definitely a performance befitting of an up and coming company’s first anniversary celebration and will be one of the major highlights of our 2009 season. At times fast and frantic, other times poignant and filled with yearning; in spite of its title, Silence is anything but quiet.

Hair
(Theatre)
Bulgaria

Talking across cultures … artistic exchange and knowledge-sharing between artists has always been part of The Substation’s mission; apart from the value of enhancing cultural understanding across different countries, the sharing of ideas and exposure of an artist’s work to a different audience is a strong stimulus for the artist’s creative growth.

This year, The Substation embarks on an exchange with the Pro Rodopi Art Centre from Bulgaria. As part of SeptFest, artistic director of Pro Rodopi, Petar Todorov, and award-winning actress Desislava Mincheva, will be in Singapore during the last week of August. This multi-talented couple has created award-winning theatre productions that incorporate physical theatre, puppet theatre, and dance, and have taken their work all over the world. They will present a workshop for theatre practitioners - Basics of a Physical Action - and a physical theatre performance, Hair. They will also be in dialogue with a group led by The Substation’s Associate Artist Elizabeth de Roza, which have been based at The Substation since November 2008, developing an actors’ training philosophy. The two groups will share their respective training techniques and theatre-making methodologies, and give a presentation to interested practitioners and members of the public.

Pro Rodopi Art Centre is a revolutionary project for Bulgarian cultural infrastructure.
It is an independent cultural centre, first of that kind in a rural area in the country.
It is a  crossroad of ideas from South-East, Central, North and West Europe. It is a result of experience, needs and visions of artists and cultural facilitators from Bulgaria, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands that are already forming an informal network.
