HENRI MATISSE THE MASTER: WORKS FROM 1917 – 1952
(VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION)
FRANCE

WingTai Holdings proudly presents together with STPI the first ever exhibition of French modern master Henri Matisse (b. France, 1869-1954). Supported by the French Embassy, this exhibition comprises 52 prints, three drawings and one painting dated 1917. This rare collection which is valued at €2.5 million (est. S$5 million) comes directly from the estate of Matisse.

This exhibition of rare and fine portraitures exemplifies the artist’s relentless study of the female form and his fascination with Oriental inspired interiors and textiles. In these works, Matisse conveys the sensuality of the bare female form not through erotic detail but in the simplicity of his drawings. These simplified forms become one with their surroundings (as in the Orientalist odalisque portrayals), at the same time serving the interests of an artistic experiment in form and composition. These works highlight the virtuosity of Matisse, where the restrained handling of lines clearly embodies the spirit of the artist.

ALAIN FLEISCHER : TIME EXPOSURES
PART OF THE MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY 2008
(Photography)
FRANCE

A major show at this year’s Month of Photography Asia (MOPAsia) is an exhibition of over 60 photographs by France’s leading contemporary photographer, filmmaker and writer, Alain Fleischer at the Singapore Art Museum.

The exhibition entitled Alain Fleischer: Time Exposures features his photography dealing with the theme of photography and cinema in which he explores the notions of time and movement in both art forms. An important feature of the exhibition is the work titled Ecran Sensible (Sensitive Screen), which was specially created in Singapore during a Master Class workshop with students from the School of Fine Arts at Lasalle College of the Arts. Ecran Sensible is a work which brings together analogue and digital photography and film technologies to produce a photographic print derived from moving images. Photographs in the exhibition span Alain Flesicher’s artistic career from the 1970s to the present.

REAL SPACE – CONCEPTUAL SPACE. PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS.
(VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION)
GERMANY

In this exhibition, photo art from the 1990s is presented. The title of the exhibition real space-conceptual space describes three different working aspects whose interrelations are evident in the architectural images by Heidi Specker, in the images of Susanne Brügger, as well as in Thomas Demand's interior views.

The special emphasis on space in connection with 'reality' and 'picture', points to photography, which transforms space and time into an image. The results of this process are represented in this exhibition with 8 black and white photos by Susanne Brügger, 7 large-format colour photographs by Thomas Demand, and 12 colour prints by Heidi Specker.

MAPPING INVISIBLE CITIES. PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKS
(Visual Arts Exhibition)
GERMANY

From October 2007 to March 2008 the renowned German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski travelled through South East Asia. He was invited by the Goethe-Institut to teach and work in Manila, Jakarta, Hanoi, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

During this time he conducted workshops and had an intensive cooperation and exchange with photographers from these countries. The outcome of their work is a colourful kaleidoscope of those six mega cities – which is as diverse as the cities themselves. The best pieces of work produced during these 6 workshops were selected to make up the exhibition “Mapping Invisible Cities”, which will now travel around the region.

CASSANDRA'S DREAM
(FILM SCREENING)
UNITED KINGDOM

This London-set feature, a modern noir with black comic trimmings. Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor play working class brothers who dream of better things than their respective mechanic and restaurant jobs. Hard-drinking Terry (Farrell) has a weakness for gambling, while brother Ian (McGregor) hankers for the finer things when he starts dating a very ambitious actress (Hayley Atwell). Fate deals a hand when their rich American uncle slinks into London with a murderous proposition. Named for the boat the lads buy during a rare flush moment - a symbol of the morally compromising power of money and the inevitability, perhaps, of fate --CASSANDRA'S DREAM is another of Woody Allen's loving looks at moneyed urbanites and their penchant for living out Greek tragedy, but with Farrell and McGregor in the leads, there's plenty of star power.

SEQUENCES
(Music)
SPAIN / SWEDEN

The Order of the Mass has long been the inspiration for some of the most beautiful choral music composed. Corrado Margutti’s Missa Lorca unties past and present with his artful marrying of excerpts from Monteverdi’s Missa In Illo Tempore with paradoxical poems of Federico Garcia Lorca. Each poem reinforces the corresponding part of Mass and provides fresh realization of the ancient rite. Hence, word is used to enhance the Word.

In contrast, Thomas Jennefelt’s Villarosa Sequences form a minimalist, almost meditative choral cycle. The text to this vocal music was written in after the music had been composed and can be seen as mere instrumentation and colouring. Formed from a latin-esque language, the composer has created text to fit his music, thus freeing it from semantics and allowing individual interpretation.
