Inspired by exceptional men and women, by the world’s great iconic figures, and the imagery of poets and dreamers, Jean Pierre Blanchard combines this greatness with a seemingly random spot of colour, with the indescribable IT that is everywhere, in nature, in the street, and in the smallest of stones. His sources of inspiration are not just the well known and extraordinaire but the not famous too. His art is continuous poetic research. “For the artist”, he says, “All thoughts, all matter, all techniques are a pretext for this creative research. The truth is in the passion that one puts there.” Twenty-five paintings of Jean-Pierre Blanchard will be exhibited at the newly renovated tcc 51 Circular Road “The Gallery” from May to August 2009. This will be his first exhibition in Asia. www.thecoffeeconnoisseur.com

Dive into the heart of Van Gogh’s paintings. For the first time, discover in IMAX the fantastic colors and passionate brushwork of a great genius as they take on a new life before our eyes. Relive Vincent’s life journey through his letters, see the places that inspired him, and the paintings.
We will meet Vincent. During this journey he will join us, reacting to the pictures, telling us what his is opinion today. He will be looking at Peter Knapp, a man who is working today on a documentary about Van Gogh’s techniques, and at Ellen, a researcher in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She is studying his notebooks and letters. They give evidence of the fire and passion of a man who painted as he loved, who loved as he painted. And Vincent, as if he were seated next to us, will tell us the truth about his works and life. This is a chance to discover a Van Gogh we’ve never seen before: serene and radiating with love of life.

Francoise Huguier is one of the great reportage photographers, winning the World Press Photo Prize in 1993. She travels the globe documenting the everyday rituals of the peoples of the world. In March/April 2009, Huguier did a residency in Singapore to develop her latest series. She has raised the question of whether a uniquely Singapore modernity exists. She has found expressions of a modern Singaporean identity in the form of the HDB dwellings in which the large majority of Singaporeans live.

Marc Riboud, best known for his extensive reports on the East, has seen the atrocities of war (photographing from both the Vietnam and the American sides of the Vietnam War), and the apparent degradation of a culture repressed from within (China during the years of Chairman Mao). One of the few Europeans to photograph in China in 1957, Riboud has witnessed the many changes that the country has undergone over the last five decades, from the Cultural Revolution to its contemporary economic revolution. This exhibition of 28 photographs from the prestigious collection of France’s Fonds national d’art contemporain (FNAC) traces a small part of Riboud’s journeys into China between 1957 and 2002 and portrays its changing geographical, social and economic landscape.

Tanguy: (French, with English subtitles) In this intelligent and extremely witty social commentary, Edith (Sabine Azema) and Paul (Andre Dussollier) are the parents of a 28-year-old PhD candidate, Tanguy (Eric Berger). A master of Chinese and Japanese language, culture, and history, Tanguy teaches classes at the university, receives highly respected research grants, and has an excellent way of communicating with people. He is graceful, reserved, expressive, and altogether a delightful young man. The only problem is that he still lives at home, with no plans of moving out or getting his own apartment any time soon. Edith and Paul are well-to-do professionals who treat their son with respect and kindness, but their patience is wearing thin. Unable to confront him about the idea that they wish he’d move on, they concoct a hilarious plan to sour his experience of living at home. Director Etienne Chatiliez presents this excellent comedy, which balances an outrageous script with impeccable performances from Azema and Dussollier as overly polite parents who just want their little “poulet” (an incredibly ironic Berger) to fly the coup. This film was included in the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2002 festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.
Whatever You Say: (French, with English subtitles) Bastien is a twentysomething assistant to Philippe Letzger, the host of an exploitive and grotesque talk show. When Bastien gets an idea for a new show that Letzger takes credit for, he decides to go to the head boss, Jean-Louis Broustal, with the truth. Broustal invites him to his lush country estate to work on a template for the new show. There he finds himself in over his head, between the demands of his boss for the show and the demands of his boss’ wife in the bedroom.
Priceless: (French, with English subtitles) Directed by Pierre Salvadori, this delightful French comedy features AMELIE star Audrey Tautou and the charming Gad Elmaleh (THE VALET). Jean (Elmaleh) is a hardworking employee at one of southern France’s elite resort hotels. He is known for his excellent work ethic, but that changes after a chance encounter with sexy hotel guest Irene (Tautou). Bored with her wealthy and much older boyfriend/benefactor, Irene is looking for some excitement. She finds it with Jean, whom she believes to be another guest at the hotel. When she discovers that he is merely an employee there, she is furious, and wants nothing more to do with him. Jean tries to rekindle their affair, but Irene lets him know that she is only interested in men with money--lots and lots of money. Jean is broke and brokenhearted, until he crosses paths with another hotel guest--this one an older woman of considerable means. He soon finds himself living the high life alongside Irene and her own rich patron. But Jean is far more interested in romance than in riches, and the glitzy fun and games quickly come to a head.
Paris Je T’aime: (French, with English subtitles) Paris, je t’aime is about the plurality of cinema in one mythic location: Paris, the City of Love. Twenty filmmakers have five minutes each; the audience must weaving a single narrative out of twenty moments. The 20 moments are fused by transitional interstitial sequences and also via the introduction and epilogue. Each transition begins with the last shot of the previous film and ends with the first shot of the following film, extending the enchantment and the emotion of the previous segment, preparing the audience for a surprise, and providing a cohesive atmosphere. There’s a reappearing mysterious character who is a witness to the Parisian life. A common theme of Paris and love fuses all.
