hello! i am 2013 – i can fly
(Art/Exhibition)
Various Countries

tcc – The Connoisseur Concerto and the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) have come together in a creative endeavour to engage young talents; this time, through the art of printmaking. tcc, STPI and art-management.com are delighted to give more than 80 children aged between 7-16 years old, of different nationalities living in Singapore, the opportunity to create their very own art.

Centralised around the theme 'I Can Fly', these children have created new works of art through special workshops conducted at STPI. Instead of conventional art mediums, participants were challenged to use silkscreens and specially designed stencils to make new works on paper. What could we possibly expect? Dragons? Superheroes? Futuristic spacecrafts? Anything is possible.

These inspired visions of flight and fantasy will be shown at tcc's 'The Gallery' from 14 April – 1 June. Each framed artwork will be available for purchase at S$199.00 and all proceeds will go to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. Don't miss this opportunity to see what happens when children expand their horizons through art!

Chun Kwang Young - Assemblages
(Art)
Korea

Wandering the coasts of American and European abstract expressionism in the early 1970s, Chun Kwang Young has been looking for a way to express himself more freely, paying tribute to his Korean heritage. Shaken by the confrontation between dreams and reality darkening the American political and social landscape in which he studied, the artist had a revelation in 1995 when he rediscovered Korean mulberry paper. Since then, he has been embracing this technique creating triangular parcels loaded with singular messages and applied on the surface of the canvas. Oppositions, dualities and obstacles make their way onto the canvas creating various layers of meaning and giving birth to a powerful and aesthetic interpretation of history.

Named artist of the year by The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul in 2001 and awarded the Art Prize by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Korea in 2009, Chun has shown his works extensively around the world in galleries and museums. His works are part of international collections.

Pursuant: a musical
(Music)
Singapore

PURSUANT is a new musical, set in a future Singapore where dreaming is banned.

Composed by Chen Zhangyi, written and directed by Jonathan Lim, it tells a story about a young boy and his quirky sidekicks who go on a quest to find the reasons, and to restore our nation’s dreams.

Ethan is a secondary school boy on this island in the year 2023. Dreaming has been made illegal but Ethan is a wild and inspired dreamer. One day he is found out by the authorities and sentenced to concentration camp, where young Singaporeans are taught to stop dreaming and focus on practicalities only.

One day, he and his two new co-dreamers are freed by an underground group of vigilantes called Dream On, led by the Can-Crushing Uncle and the Cardboard Box Auntie. Ethan leads them on a quest to find The Old Man who keeps appearing in his dreams and whose dream once inspired the nation into being. Perhaps he holds the secret to why dreams have fallen out of favour, and what it would take to have the nation dreaming again.

Fête de la Musique
(Music)
France

The Alliance Française de Singapour brings Fête de la musique (World Music Day) to Singapore Botanic Gardens Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage on Saturday 22 June 2013. The worldwide theme for this 32nd edition is 'Voices'. A musical instrument of choice, shared by all, the voice remains a unique and treasured element. Present in all stages of our lives, the voice reveals and reflects the state of our souls. Powerful, serious, fragile or precious, it translates our personality entirely. Opera or choral, acoustic rock or traditional Mariachi, French chansons or salsa, on 22 June, many voices and styles will be in the spotlight in the Botanic Gardens!

The Fête de la musique, completely different from a music festival, is above all a free popular fête, and basks in its uniqueness offering both amateur and professional musicians to their free expressions. The slogan Faites de la musique (Make music), a homophone of Fête de la Musique, is used to promote this goal. Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for Culture, it is a day dedicated to the expression of all styles of music in a convivial atmosphere. The Fête aims to popularize musical practice for the young and young-at-heart from all social backgrounds. Since its inception more than three decades ago, Fête de la musique is now held in more than 100 countries all over the world. Each year, the Fête de la Musique is reinvented, fine-tuning itself with the cultural specialty of each celebrating country. Hence, it continues to be an emblem of each one of them.

The Alliance Française de Singapour has been organizing the Fête de la musique in Singapore for more than 10 years. Singapore, along with its eclectic mix of various nations remains unparalleled as a multi-cultural hub to experience the resonance of this mega event.
