The virtuoso haute couture designer Christian Lacroix, who is known for defining the look of the 1980s with its bright colours and extravagant embellishments, presents his splendid costume design work of 20 years for the ballet, theatre and opera in this exclusive exhibition.
In Asia for the very first time, 80 spectacular costumes and 60 sketches from the collection of the Centre National du Costume de Scène (National Costume Centre, Moulins, France) and from Lacroix himself, will take stage at the National Museum of Singapore from March to June 2009.
Lacroix's inspiration for productions such as Carmen, Gaîte Parisienne, Othello, Cosi Fan Tutte and Phedre are eclectic, drawing from a wide variety of sources, and are at once historical and yet modern. A knowledgeable and mischievous storyteller, the splendid costumes tells of tales of love and hate, and the dramas of comedy and tragedies.

Inspired by exceptional men and women, by the world’s great iconic figures, and the imagery of poets and dreamers, Jean Pierre Blanchard combines this greatness with a seemingly random spot of colour, with the indescribable IT that is everywhere, in nature, in the street, and in the smallest of stones. His sources of inspiration are not just the well known and extraordinaire but the not famous too. His art is continuous poetic research. “For the artist”, he says, “All thoughts, all matter, all techniques are a pretext for this creative research. The truth is in the passion that one puts there.” Twenty-five paintings of Jean-Pierre Blanchard will be exhibited at the newly renovated tcc 51 Circular Road “The Gallery” from May to August 2009. Dive into the heart of Van Gogh’s paintings. For the first time, discover in IMAX the fantastic colors and passionate brushwork of a great genius as they take on a new life before our eyes. Relive Vincent’s life journey through his letters, see the places that inspired him, and the paintings.
We will meet Vincent. During this journey he will join us, reacting to the pictures, telling us what his is opinion today. He will be looking at Peter Knapp, a man who is working today on a documentary about Van Gogh’s techniques, and at Ellen, a researcher in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She is studying his notebooks and letters. They give evidence of the fire and passion of a man who painted as he loved, who loved as he painted. And Vincent, as if he were seated next to us, will tell us the truth about his works and life. This is a chance to discover a Van Gogh we’ve never seen before: serene and radiating with love of life.
This passionate voyage, this new closeness to Van Gogh – the masterpieces and the man – open up a world of unexpected, intense emotions on the giant screen. The film offers us the unique joy of seeing and getting to know, with ever increasing admiration, the man whose energy and freedom are intrinsically bound to the great beauty of his work. www.omnitheatre.com.sg

The photographer’s intention is to create a series of photography books called “Up Close”. Many of us get caught up in the ‘busy-ness’ of life and seldom have time to stop, look and appreciate what is right in front of us. In “Up Close – The Venice Carnival”, the first book of the series, Fey is using the Venice Carnival with all of its vitality, its expressions of brilliance, as a medium to remind us of the beauty of life up close. In this book and exhibition, she invites us to take a walk with her and see the Venice Carnival up close. As a photographer Fey has viewed, and appreciated, the Carnival and its true beauty with her heart and soul. Through this book and exhibition, she hopes that we now do the same with ours. www.fey.sg

An un-chronological look at the life of the Little Sparrow, Edith Piaf (1915 - 1963). Her mother is an alchoholic street singer, her father a circus performer, her paternal grandmother a madam. During childhood, she lives with each of them. At 20, she's a street singer discovered by a club owner who's soon murdered , coached by a musician who brings her to concert hall, then quickly becomes famous. Her constant companions soon prove to be alcohol and heartache. The tragedies of her love affair with Marcel Cerdan and the death of her only child belie the words of one of her signature songs, "Non, je ne regrette rien". The back and forth nature of the narrative suggest the patterns of memory and association.

An invitation to be brave...
The world is full of risks to be avoided. The economy is collapsing, the climate is changing and fireworks are too loud. YET, life is to be lived, and revealing its beauty requires a risk and venturing into the unkown.
Crackers? is a celebration of the explosive and dangerous beauty of fire and fireworks and an exploration of our attitudes to Risk.
Not for the fainthearted, Crackers? combines fireworks, projection, performance and music. Performed 'in the round', with the audience surrounded by fire & smoke, spinning wheels and fireworks. A symphony of pyrotechnic sounds fills the air. It's loud, disorientating and cacophonous, but there are moments of delicate and profound beauty...dancing flames, giant Catherine Wheels and the 'human sparkler'...
Shall we take a risk?

In March/April 2009, Huguier did a residency in Singapore to develop her latest series. She has raised the question of whether a uniquely Singapore modernity exists. She has found expressions of a modern Singaporean identity in the form of the HDB dwellings in which the large majority of Singaporeans live.

The Fête begins with a production of Cabaret, directed by French playwright, actor and specialist in teaching French through theatre, Jean-Jacques Bellot. Cabaret is a compilation of texts by Karl Valentin, Roland Dubilard and Jean Anouilh. It is not to be confused with Cabaret, the musical by Joe Masteroff. Cabaret by Mr Bellot is a pedagogical project designed for intermediate and advanced French students of the Alliance Française to perfect their French through a theatre workshop. Mr Bellot’s theatrical career began at the Comedie de Bourges and at the Théâtre de Bourgogne by performing a notably classical repertoire (Goldoni, Shakespeare, Molière, Gogol…). He founded his own company with Jean Menaud, the Théâtre du Capricorne which presented a diverse range of works by various authors (from Alfred de Musset to Tennessee Williams, from Eschyle to Cocteau). A number of his productions have been chosen to tour various countries in Africa, Latin America and the Pacific. In Paris and at the Festival off d’Avignon, he performed in adapted as well as traditional plays (Jacques le Fataliste by Diderot, Bérénice by Racine…).

Marc Riboud, best known for his extensive reports on the East, has seen the atrocities of war (photographing from both the Vietnam and the American sides of the Vietnam War), and the apparent degradation of a culture repressed from within (China during the years of Chairman Mao). One of the few Europeans to photograph in China in 1957, Riboud has witnessed the many changes that the country has undergone over the last five decades, from the Cultural Revolution to its contemporary economic revolution. This exhibition of 28 photographs from the prestigious collection of France’s Fonds national d’art contemporain (FNAC) traces a small part of Riboud’s journeys into China between 1957 and 2002 and portrays its changing geographical, social and economic landscape.

Day Off, through its children, likes to think of itself as a bitter-sweet portrait of our time, as was in its own way, François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows forty years ago. From Tuesday night till Thursday morning, school pupils live the story of their lives, which is the story of our world. They go home to their ‘families’: traditional, broken up, single-parented, restructured – in a word, the families of today. It’s into this crazy, crazy, crazy world that the school administrator entrusts his flock. It comes as no surprise that it would have been better if he’d left the parents in the children’s care.

Lorraine Ayensu trio delivers tender ballads to up-tempo and Latin-influenced tunes, a seamless blend of folk, acoustic soul, world beat and urban jazz. Audiences are often amazed by the fullness of the sound with just Lorraine on guitar and vocals, British composer Norma Daykin on alto and electronic saxophones and Ghanaian maestro Nii Tagoe on percussions. It is the best of British and American song-writing sensibilities fused with other rhythms from around the world. Lorraine’s performance is followed by renowned Cuban pianist Nachito Herrera’s exclusive concert here in Singapore. Milestones Double Bill is an event highlight of Singapore River Festival 2009.
