The virtuoso haute couture designer Christian Lacroix, who is known for defining the look of the 1980s with its bright colours and extravagant embellishments, presents his splendid costume design work of 20 years for the ballet, theatre and opera in this exclusive exhibition.
In Asia for the very first time, 80 spectacular costumes and 60 sketches from the collection of the Centre National du Costume de Scène (National Costume Centre, Moulins, France) and from Lacroix himself, will take stage at the National Museum of Singapore from March to June 2009.
Lacroix's inspiration for productions such as Carmen, Gaîte Parisienne, Othello, Cosi Fan Tutte and Phedre are eclectic, drawing from a wide variety of sources, and are at once historical and yet modern. A knowledgeable and mischievous storyteller, the splendid costumes tells of tales of love and hate, and the dramas of comedy and tragedies.

Inspired by exceptional men and women, by the world’s great iconic figures, and the imagery of poets and dreamers, Jean Pierre Blanchard combines this greatness with a seemingly random spot of colour, with the indescribable IT that is everywhere, in nature, in the street, and in the smallest of stones. His sources of inspiration are not just the well known and extraordinaire but the not famous too. His art is continuous poetic research. “For the artist”, he says, “All thoughts, all matter, all techniques are a pretext for this creative research. The truth is in the passion that one puts there.” Twenty-five paintings of Jean-Pierre Blanchard will be exhibited at the newly renovated tcc 51 Circular Road “The Gallery” from May to August 2009. A man finds himself in the middle of a desert, mysteriously provided with tools that are taken away as soon as they become useful - how will he cope? Two men, one blind, the other lame, find each other in an abandoned landscape in the middle of winter. By helping each other, they just might make life a little more bearable. Given their options, and the tendencies of human nature, will it end in friendship or violence? These and other scenarios are the subject of World-in-Theatre’s Precious Little: Brief Encounters with Beckett.
Hailed as one of the most important writers of the 20th Century, Samuel Beckett’s major works, such as Waiting for Godot and Endgame have been performed in theatres all over the world. However, his shorter works, though widely acclaimed, are performed far less frequently. Brief and intense, the plays throw the human condition into sharp relief and create a stripped down theatricality that asks a great deal from its actors.
The origin of the title “Precious Little” comes from one of the last interviews Beckett gave before his death in 1989. When asked if he had found any part of his life’s journey worthwhile, he replied, “Precious little.”
World-in-Theatre’s Precious Little: Brief Encounters with Beckett offers Singapore audiences a rare opportunity to familiarise themselves with some of these lesser-known works and to examine the world through the eyes of this Nobel Prize -winning writer. www.world-in-theatre.org

Christian Lacroix is a man firmly entrenched in his era, who views the past with tenderness and admiration, fully devours the present and imagines the future with a kaleidoscopic spirit. Highly influenced by contemporary art, today Christian Lacroix designs his creations using a more graphic and pure style. With his background in historical costume and clothing, Lacroix made headlines with his opulent, fantasy creations, including the short puffball skirt (“le pouf”), rose prints, and low décolleté necklines. He quoted widely from other styles—from fashion history (the corset and the crinoline), from folklore, and from many parts of the world—and he mixed his quotations in a topsy-turvy manner. Christian Lacroix’s costume designs for the opera, theatre, dance and music can be seen at the exhibition “Christian Lacroix Costumier” at the National Museum of Singapore from March to June 2009. www.audifashionfestival.com

Dive into the heart of Van Gogh’s paintings. For the first time, discover in IMAX the fantastic colors and passionate brushwork of a great genius as they take on a new life before our eyes. Relive Vincent’s life journey through his letters, see the places that inspired him, and the paintings.
We will meet Vincent. During this journey he will join us, reacting to the pictures, telling us what his is opinion today. He will be looking at Peter Knapp, a man who is working today on a documentary about Van Gogh’s techniques, and at Ellen, a researcher in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She is studying his notebooks and letters. They give evidence of the fire and passion of a man who painted as he loved, who loved as he painted. And Vincent, as if he were seated next to us, will tell us the truth about his works and life. This is a chance to discover a Van Gogh we’ve never seen before: serene and radiating with love of life.
This passionate voyage, this new closeness to Van Gogh – the masterpieces and the man – open up a world of unexpected, intense emotions on the giant screen. The film offers us the unique joy of seeing and getting to know, with ever increasing admiration, the man whose energy and freedom are intrinsically bound to the great beauty of his work. www.omnitheatre.com.sg

Revenge! Greed! Fratricide! Forbidden Love! These are the staples of the operatic narrative.
The films in this series engage in a heightened, melodramatic quasi-realism that is typical of opera. The visual strategies employed, combined with the musical score, produce a spatial and temporal experience which can only be found in the Cinema. Luchino Visconti and Sergio Leone are the two leading exponent of this approach, self-consciously foregrounding the operatic sensibilities to the greatest degree, both in terms of content and style. The programme includes a triptych of Visconti’s celebrated masterpieces – Senso, The Damned, and L’innocente; and Leone’s celebrated “Dollars” trilogy – A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

The photographer’s intention is to create a series of photography books called “Up Close”. Many of us get caught up in the ‘busy-ness’ of life and seldom have time to stop, look and appreciate what is right in front of us. In “Up Close – The Venice Carnival”, the first book of the series, Fey is using the Venice Carnival with all of its vitality, its expressions of brilliance, as a medium to remind us of the beauty of life up close. In this book and exhibition, she invites us to take a walk with her and see the Venice Carnival up close. As a photographer Fey has viewed, and appreciated, the Carnival and its true beauty with her heart and soul. Through this book and exhibition, she hopes that we now do the same with ours. www.fey.sg

An isolated mansion in the snowy countryside of 1950s France. A family is gathered for the holiday season...But there will be no celebration - their beloved patriarch has been murdered ! The killer can only be one of the eight women closest to the man of the house. Was it his powerful wife? His spinster sister-in-law? His miserly mother-in-law? Maybe the insolent maid or the loyal housekeeper? Or could it possibly have been one of his two pretty young daughters? A surprise visit from the victim's glamorous sister turns the investigation into a day of hysterics, rivalries and even musical interludes. Comic situations are spiced with dark family secrets. Seduction dances with betrayal. The mystery of the female psyche is revealed. Eight women. All of them suspects. Each has a motive. Each has a secret. Eight women. Beautiful, tempestuous, mysterious, intelligent, sensual and dangerous...One of them is guilty. Which one is it? www.alliancefrancaise.org.sg

Watch the gigantic Diamond come to life. Unfurling like a transparent giant orchid, it achieves full bloom at a height of 11 metres. Be mesmerised as the solo aerial dancer within moves and twirls to the crescendos of music and colourful, dancing lights, suspended on what seems to be nothing but a column of light. After dark, the lights reflect and refract in crystalline formations, creating ghostly images that mirror the hypnotic beauty of the dancer.
