HANS MENDLER
TO THE UNKNOWN SIDE: ART FOLLOWING AN INSTINCT

(VISUAL ARTS)
GERMANY

Be enchanted by the works of acclaimed German artist Hans Mendler who expresses himself in a language of colours, surfaces and lines through his paintings. Hans Mendler follows his artistic instinct with the use of colour that for him embodies both spatial and atmospheric dimensions. The act of painting then becomes one of the internalisation and self-reflection for the painter.

Mendler’s works concentrate on the use of colour, enhancing it by layering, to produce an orchestral brightness of rich creations using unconventional canvas surfaces and materials.

VIEW FROM THE INSIDE - CAN EUROPE BECOME A GREAT POWER?
BY HIS EXCELLENCY PIERRE BUHLER,
AMBASSADOR OF FRANCE TO SINGAPORE
(SEMINAR)
EUROPE

Seen by some as the only way forward and by others as a dead end, the concept of Europe as a great power has often been categorically rejected only to resurface later with renewed urgency.

What is the credibility of a foreign policy which rejects the power to coerce? Can a construct such as the European Union morph into a conventional power be able to care for its own security without destroying its singularity and cohesion? Is Europe pioneering a new kind of power and inventing the forms and norms of post - modern power?

As the French presidency of the Council of the European Union draws to a close, French Ambassador to Singapore Pierre Buhler will provide a fresh perspective on these issues, in the light of the Union's recent actions to address the pressing challenges of our time.

X’MAS @ CONNOISSEUR ART GALLERY
(VISUAL ARTS)
SWEDEN

The year wouldn’t be complete without a good celebration at Christmas. Connoisseur Art Gallery celebrates this Christmas with a month-long exhibition from Dec 10 to 30. This group exhibition will showcase the artworks by our principal Chinese and European artists such as JIA Juan Li, GE Shu Qing, TSUI Tin Yun, Christian GAILLARD and Dorina MOCAN. The works by these internationally-acclaimed artists boast of their technical superiority and artistic virtue in their respective field of expertise and choice of distinctive subject matter.

One of the highlights of the exhibition would be the works by Swedish female artist, Dorina MOCAN. Drawing from her Romanian background and inspiration from the Gotland landscape, an island of Sweden, MOCAN’s paintings unite mythological themes with classical symbols to celebrate childhood and nature. Each painting signifies an enchanted meeting she’s had, with an object, a person, or a memory based on her childhood days. So vivid are MOCAN’s paintings that they inevitably lead us into the artist’s world of imagery, and her world of childhood, where we can escape the world that we belong to and enter into a secret place that is timeless and childlike this Christmas.
