Dive into the heart of Van Gogh’s paintings. For the first time, discover in IMAX the fantastic colors and passionate brushwork of a great genius as they take on a new life before our eyes. Relive Vincent’s life journey through his letters, see the places that inspired him, and the paintings.
We will meet Vincent. During this journey he will join us, reacting to the pictures, telling us what his is opinion today. He will be looking at Peter Knapp, a man who is working today on a documentary about Van Gogh’s techniques, and at Ellen, a researcher in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She is studying his notebooks and letters. They give evidence of the fire and passion of a man who painted as he loved, who loved as he painted. And Vincent, as if he were seated next to us, will tell us the truth about his works and life. This is a chance to discover a Van Gogh we’ve never seen before: serene and radiating with love of life.
This passionate voyage, this new closeness to Van Gogh – the masterpieces and the man – open up a world of unexpected, intense emotions on the giant screen. The film offers us the unique joy of seeing and getting to know, with ever increasing admiration, the man whose energy and freedom are intrinsically bound to the great beauty of his work. www.omnitheatre.com.sg

Born on 19 June 1954 in Den Bosch, The Netherlands, young Ronald Wigman was fascinated with travelling. As a child, he collected postcards from all around the world, which served as a catalyst for his future travels and creative mind.
Wigman worked as a graphic designer until the early 1990s, where he then went on to dedicate his time to the arts, producing independent artworks, video art, art installations, and every now and then, some graphic design work such as t-shirts and web designs.
Stylistically, Wigman’s works incorporates his experiences and thoughts about travelling. He also has a fascination for maps: city maps, road maps. Just like maps, his works are built structurally based on the arrangement of colour, almost without the illusion of three-dimensional space. Just like maps, Wigman’s paintings display images of reality seen from a certain height, with a ‘bird’s eye view’ perspective.
Wigman paints with the vision of a cartographer who has a strong sense of design. Even so, his paintings show that Wigman does not only work as a designer who serves plans and order. With the eye of a cartographer, Wigman conducted reduction on the complexity of his experiences in three-dimensional space in order to master the two-dimensional space of his canvases. Along with the reduction process, however, Wigman’s creative instincts move his body to enjoy, explore, and articulate various particular sensations that cannot be reduced or mapped.
Now, Wigman resides in Bali, Indonesia where he continues his journey as an artist.

The 25th Singapore French Film Festival celebrates its Silver Jubilee in October 2009
For the past 25 years, the Singapore French Film Festival has brought the French language, arts, history, culture and daily lives to audiences in Singapore. From 2 to 11 October 2009, the first-ever foreign film festival in Singapore will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Singapore French Film Festival was inaugurated in October 1985. It was then known as “La Semaine du Cinéma”. The selection of films presented from 20 to 25 October 1985 did not focus on the latest films being screened exclusively at the Champs-Elysées. Rather, a selection of movies was made from the numerous productions of the three or four preceding years. It represented a general picture, subjective of course, of the French filmmakers of that time. The “Semaine du Cinéma” brought to the island-state French films which had never before been screened in Singapore.
Anthology of Works by First-Time Directors A collection of works by first-time directors will be featured during the festival. These first-time directors broach a wide spectrum of issues, from boxing to sexuality, from political fanaticism to familial relationships.
Award-Winners Award-winning movies include Capitaine Achab (Captain Ahab), Ceux qui restent (Those Who Remain), Dans la vie (Two Ladies) and Dernier maquis (Adhen). A historical drama, Jean de la Fontaine, will bring to life one of France’s most beloved writer, played by Lorànt Deutsch. Fans of Agatha Christie’s detective fiction works can look forward to L’heure zero (Towards Zero).

DISTANCE AND PROXIMITY is dedicated to the clear, even austere, vision of Bernd and Hilla Becher and their former students of the art of photography at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art. In the context of a 2008 conference on Mosque Building in Germany’ in Essen, Wilfried Dechau, an architectural photographer and the former editor-in-chief of Deutsche Bauzeitung db, travelled ‘Muslim Germany’ for two months, documenting the religious community, life and architecture of Germany’s largest religious minority group. On his trip from Penzberg to Hamburg he recorded the features of modern Mosque architecture, of Ottoman-inspired minarets, domes and minbars, enlivened by the presence of imams, laughing children, men during Friday prayer, and women socialising. Yet apart from creating colourful and expressive pictures of believers and belief set in stone his lens also focuses on the controversial aspect of modern Mosque building in predominantly Christian societies–albeit never moralising. His photographs of the worshippers’ candid smiles, curious stares and direct glances invite the viewer into the intimacy of Muslim religious life and thus belie the stereotypes of the inaccessibility and alienation of Islam.

Philippe Abrams is manager of the postal service in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. However, he cons a postal inspector to get the position he wants and gets caught in the act. As punishment, he is banished to Bergues, a town near Dunkirk in northern France, for two years - a cold and rainy, unsophisticated place, filled with yokels (called ch'tis, i.e. Northern French people) who speak a strange, barely understandable dialect (called "ch'ti" or "cheutimi" according to Southern French people). To Philippe's surprise, Bergues is a charming place teaming with warm, friendly people and co-workers. He tries to describe the happy turn of events to his wife who has remained in the South with his child, but she absolutely refuses to believe him. This inspires Philippe to tell her what she wants to believe is true. Julie becomes so convinced by the impressions of his wretched life that she decides to join him in the North to relieve his gloom. Philippe is forced to confess to his new friends and colleagues that he has described them as barbarians to his wife. He begs them to behave as such to cover for his lies and to scare Julie so she will depart quickly. Philippe's comrades throw themselves into the masquerade and give Julie the worst weekend of her life, with comic (and sexy) results.

Young Musicians' Society presents baritone Eng Meng Chia as he returns home to reprise the role of the wanderer in Schubert’s Winterreise. Considered to be one of the greatest song cycles ever written, Schubert here raises the importance of the pianist equal to that of the singer – a role suitably fulfilled by none other than Shane Thio. Based on a cycle of twenty-four poems by Wilhelm Müller, Winterreise maps the journey of a love-spurned wanderer. The harsh elements of the winter landscape echo his desolation and his solitude is magnified with each creature he encounters; never another human till the end.
A graduate of the Royal College of Music and Hochschule for Music in Munich, where he is currently based, Eng Meng Chia studied under Arrigo Pola, Carlo Bergonzi and Professor Shen Xiang. While in Singapore, he had regular appearances with SSO and SLO and conducted several school choirs whilst holding the position of Artistic Director of Musica Cantabile and the International Festival Chorus. Eng is a member of the renowned Bayreuth Festival Chorus and the Concert Chorus of the Bavarian Radio Choir and is the first known Singaporean to perform Winterreise in its entirety.

Bring on the night (15 Oct) After having toured Europe very successfully with their Queen show “A Night at the Opera” and their vocal rock show “Timeless”, the four men of a capella group Rock4 are now taking on a new challenge: music from Sting and The Police.
The new theatre show by these Maastricht-based vocal artists is entirely devoted to this singer and his legendary band. The show will not only feature famous songs like “Every breath you take”, “Spirits in the material world”, “Roxanne” and “Set them free”, but also exciting new arrangements of lesser known work, such as “Shadows in the rain”, “Desert rose” and “Voices inside my head”.
Every note, every sound enhances the music, making “Bring on the Night” a really intense experience, for the singers as well as the audience.
Timeless (16 Oct) An ode to timeless music. That is what the latest theatre concert by the Maastricht based group Rock4 is all about. The audience is taken on a fascinating trip through decades of superb rock music and it is treated to innovative adaptations of legendary songs by Supertramp, Pink Floyd, The Alan Parsons Project, Jeff Buckley, Coldplay and the like.
The internationally acclaimed vocal artists make the audience rediscover timeless songs and bring rock legends back to life, all in their own traditional Rock4 style. What Rock4 does, is simply unique.

While observing the Berlin Philharmonic during a rehearsal of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps in 2003 by Sir Simon Rattle which was documented in the award-winning film Rhythm is it ! , Xavier Le Roy was fascinated and inspired by the functions of the conductor's gestures, movements, and decided to venture into a laborious process of studying a conductor's interpretation as it were to be a choreography of its own. He created a piece in which a range of the conductor’s actions are painstakingly recreated on a bare stage, to a recorded soundtrack. The audience, seated in an immersive and atmospheric surround-sound environment, in turn becomes a instrument-less orchestra. And hearing as a result becomes part of an embodied, inevitably visceral experience of movement and sound. Choreographer Xavier Le Roy defies categorisation as a dance-maker, drawing on diverse influences from the worlds of science, performance art and contemporary dance.

Oskar, 12, lives in a working-class suburb in Stockholm. He befriends Eli, the new girl who has moved in next door, but soon finds out that she is actually a 200-year-old vampire. Their friendship remains strong despite the odds they have to face, including keeping Oskar's bullies away, albeit with a terrible conclusion.
The title of the film, which is based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel, refers to a slice of vampiric folklore, which states that a vampire cannot enter a house unless it is invited. There will be a post-show dialogue with the author, moderated by newspaper columnist Tay Yeak Keak.
